BACKGROUND
In July of this year, the Trump administration called for a ban of TikTok in the U.S., citing security concerns. In an executive order issued in August, another app with Chinese ties, WeChat, was also listed among TikTok. TikTok is the second most popular social media among Gen Z and millennials in the U.S., and WeChat is the biggest platform of communication between Chinese students and diaspora with friends and family back home in China. The decision reflects the U.S. government’s new measurements towards social media, information, and cybersecurity, though the critics question the actual political purpose of the ban. After a series of developments, the ban is yet to take place; however, these events will cause further foreign policy implications for the two countries.
